The accused, Balu Tikade, reportedly dragged the 10-year-old girl to one of the gents toilets and repeatedly raped her. Tikade was caught by alert residents who heard the victim screaming.
An investigator said the incident occurred when the victim, a class V student, came out of the ladies' toilet around 3 pm. Tikade is a painter who lives in the same locality as the victim.
"Tikade was standing outside the toilet. He handcuff the victim's hand and dragged her to the gent's toilet, locked the door and committed the offence," the investigator said.
During the probe the Bhandup police came to know that Tikade is a painter by profession and resides in the neighbourhood where the victim stays with her parents. However, the victim's family are not known to the accused neither they have noticed him in the locality.
The victim is a brilliant student and the school has felicitated her for outstanding achievements for topping in several subjects in the class V examination. "The girl and her parent's are in a state of shock," a police officer said.
The matter came to light luckily when someone from the locality got suspicious on seeing Tikade's standing outside the ladies' public toilet. "The eye-witness said within a fraction of second Tikade was found missing from the spot. On suspicion the person, witness in the case, went closer to the toilet and heard the minor girl screaming for help," Bhandup police senior inspector Shrirang Nadgauda said.
Nadgauda said the locals caught Tikade when he opened the toilet door and found the victim along with him.
