Crime Capital: DU students demand more security

By Smriti Advani

New Delhi: Students of Delhi University at a public hearing organised by the National Commission for women wanted to know what's being done to keep them safe. The country's capital is witness to horrific crimes against women day after day.
And while the police did offer some solutions, the Capital is still reeling under the spate of crimes committed against women in the last few months.
DSP (South) HGS Dhaliwal said, "College unions should tell us about any untoward incident as soon as it happens."
On March 8, 21-year-old Radhika Tanwar was shot dead on this footbridge near her college in Delhi's South Campus. Not a single witness had come forward to identify the man who shot her. Her killer was caught days later.
The same area witnessed another crime in November last year when a BPO employee was dragged into a moving car and raped by five men.
But these incidents are just the tip of the iceberg. In Delhi alone, about 507 women were raped in 2010 and 601 women were molested.
And till February 28 this year, approximately 42 women in the capital have been raped and another 73 molested according to police records.
These statistics speak louder than their words. So even as meetings are held and promises made, very little gets translated into action.
