The man came forward a day after her body was cremated.
Police said, "The woman was cremated on Wednesday afternoon. Around 5.30 pm on Thursday, a man arrived at the Sabzi Mandi mortuary with a newspaper clipping, claiming that the woman in the photograph bore an uncanny resemblance to that of his daughter, a software engineer."
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Bhairon Singh Gurjar said, "We are in the process of verifying the man's claim. The verification will be completed tomorrow."
Sources said the woman had moved out of her parents' house in Nawada, Uttam Nagar area, a few months ago.
She had moved into a rented accommodation in Central Delhi's Paharganj area. Police have refused to comment on the development in the case until the verification process is over.
The woman's postmortem examination was conducted under the category of unknown persons, and the body was cremated on Wednesday, 12 days after the body was found.
"Rules permit the body to be kept in the mortuary for nine days. It was specifically for this case that the period was extended by another three days," a police officer said.
Meanwhile, Gurjar said, "Since the day the body was found on February 11, more than 70 people have contacted us -- some in person, many over the phone -- to claim the body."
