Tripura State Rifles jawan accused of rape and murder send to police custody

Agartala, Feb 21 : A Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan, accused of rapping and murdering a NCT candidate on Februray 18 night, was sent to plice custody.

Police said accussed Deepak Debbarma, cook of TSR 6th battalion deployed in Shikaribari area under Khowai sub-division of West Tripura, was produced before court and subsequently sent to police custody today.

According to report, the habitants of Aidangkur village gheraoed the TSR camp after a jawan was reportedly found to have gang-raped and murdered Nilima Debbarma (28), a Trinamool Congress ally tribal based National Council of Tripura (NCT) candidate for the village committee election in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The poll is scheduled to be held on February 24 next. However, police report stated in course of investigation it found that the deceased, consumed liquor in the house of one Ashankya Debbarma near TSR camp along with the accused jawans.

The incident triggered off reaction in the political circle, as NCT Chief Animesh Debbarma, Trinamool Congress leader Arun Chandra Bhowmik and Congress spokesperson Ratan Chakraborty demanded immediate resignation of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar who also holds home department portfolio.
