Love knows no boundaries, no law

Robber enlists help of police officials to free lady love from brothel and marries her. Is arrested just a week later

A robber pulled the wool over the eyes of police officials to enlist their help to marry the woman he loved.

The police officials from Nagpada police station raided a brothel in Kamathipura to rescue Meena (26, name changed), a sex worker, last Sunday after Rajveer Singh Jageer Singh alias Jassi, approached them for help. He told him he was in love with Meena, who has a two year-old daughter, but the brothel owner had refused to let her leave. Pitying his plight, the officials agreed to help the couple and managed to secure Meena's release.

The Chembur resident wed Meena the same day at a temple, but their happiness was short lived.

What the 26 year-old omitted to tell the police was that he made a living stealing trucks with his 50 year-old partner Jaswant Singh Sone Singh Sandhu alias Jassa.

On Friday, sub-inspector Bhashkar Kadam, constables Hriday Mishra and Subhash Mali attached to Unit-2 of the Crime Branch arrested the duo from Byculla for stealing a truck parked in Mankhurd last month. The truck contained sacks of rice and was worth Rs 21 lakh. The duo sold the truck for Rs 2 lakh to a dhaba owner at Tarapur, on the outskirts of the city.

Inspector Sanjay Baswat of Unit 2 said, "While Jassa has been stealing trucks for 15 years and has been arrested 45 times, Jassi has gone to prison only once for his crimes. The two are habitual robbers and target trucks, lorries and dumpers parked outside dhabas."

Jassa, a veteran at such thefts, changes his appearance by dressing like a Sikh and wears a paghdi while committing the robbery. He remains clean shaven the rest of the time.

The two are in police custody.
