The woman, Rajratna Nadar, 50, is a mental patient and resided in Virar township with her daughter Almamary and husband Selvaraj.
"Almamary was allegedly hit on her head with a wooden club used for washing clothes. Rajratna then hacked off the body parts of her daughter with a sharp kitchen knife," police inspector Y.R.Bagwan said.
He said Rajratna had tried to burn some of the parts as they were found in half charred condition. "We found Almamary's head, an arm and the rest of the body in the bathroom," he said.
Rajratna used to get angry every now and then and Almamary took care of her while Selvaraj was away at work. Selvaraj lodged an FIR late Friday in which he mentioned that his wife not only killed their daughter but also chopped off her head, hands and legs.
"He came to know about the incident when he returned from work Friday night," Bhagwan said. When Selvaraj could not find Almamary and asked his wife, she mumbled something incomprehensible.
"He then looked for her and found his daughter's body, cut up, in the bathroom," Bagwan said. "Rajratna has been brought before a court and has been remanded in judicial custody, where she is undergoing medical examination," he added.
Residents of the building also confirmed that Rajratna suffered bouts of insanity every now and then. She had started screaming and hurling abuses from the balcony of her house Friday afternoon, following which Almamary had taken her inside.
"Neighbours said that Rajratna continued to scream even while inside," Bagwan said. "She is visibly mentally instable. She has no recollection of her daughter being dead and still acts as if she is alive," Bagwan said.
