Bangalore: Jitesh Lal, a Jain, paid Rs 3 lakh to marry Divya, but the marriage lasted just one day because less than 12 hours after the wedding Lal, 26, realised divya was not a Jain as he had thought. Two marriage brokers Shantilal and Hasmukh Lal had cheated him - exploiting what is a serious lack of brides in the Jain community.
Pukhraj Jain, Jitesh's uncle said, "Shantilal used to arrange grooms, Hasmukh would arrange brides and in Nasik, Basant would arrange for duplicate Jain mothers and fathers, the entire family of brides. Just in Karnataka, they have cheated nearly 30 grooms like this. So many of our sons' lives are destroyed now."
Police say the scam worked because Jains shy away from going to the police in several cases where fraud took place, brides would go back home after a month or so never to return and sometimes, extort more money by threatening dowry harassment cases.
SN Sidramappa, DCP (West) said, "This is the first case reported. After this marriage, again they brought two brides from Maharashtra. We arrested six to seven people in this regard.
If we kill our daughters, who'll be wives and mothers ten years from now that argument of sociologists against female infanticide has turned real now and going by the Census 2011 figures and the skewed male-female ratio even in cities like Bangalore, well this incident, is just a warning of the signs to come.
