According to the police, Narendra Mahlawat surrendered on Friday at the DLF phase II police station and was produced at a city court on Sunday. The court of judicial magistrate Jasbeer Singh sent Mahlawat to judicial custody. The accused confessed that he had hidden the vehicle at his village house in Gadoli. A team of police officials was sent to Gadoli and recovered the Mercedes.
The police had earlier maintained that the vehicle which was used in the crime did not belong to him and that he "fixed a fake number plate" to hide identity. City police had told the court that the car originally belonged to one Hitesh of Palam Vihar. Narendra had lent some cash to Hitesth and as he failed to return the loan amount, the accused had taken the car from him. Hitesh had committed suicide on April 24 and Narendra had been using the car after changing its number plate. "The accused said that he is the owner of the car and he has a sale letter ofthe car which was given to him by the former owner of the car. But he could not produce the puchase documents during interrogation," said Babu Lal, SHO, DLF-II.
