Fake perfumes and deodorants, worth over Rs 30 lakh, of almost all leading Indian and imported brands were seized, said cops. Police said the chemicals used to manufacture these fake deodorants and perfumes were extremely harmful and samples have been sent to chemical lab for further investigation.
Cops have arrested four people. The accused have been identified as Asiul Islam (25), Baharul (19), Zahirul Islam (19) and Usman Khan (20). The two unit owners - Hafizul Gazi and Mohammad Shafiq - are on the run.
The raid was carried out around 2pm based on a tip-off. "We have seized 10 machines used for mixing alcohols and perfumes. These also include flammable cylinders where the products are compressed," said additional DCP (crime) Joy Tirkey. "Without any proper licence, the two units - operating from two houses in the Nizamuddin West area - could have witnessed a major accident,'' said Tirkey.
"We found the accused paid the rag pickers extra money to get discarded cans of the leading brands. They then opened the seal, refilled the cans and then re-sealed them. The cans were distributed across the city through smaller traders, each bottle bringing in profits of over Rs 400-5000, depending on the brand,'' said a source.
Earlier, officials of the dock intelligence unit in Chennai had intercepted two containers from which they seized fake branded perfume bottles and deodorants. The customs authorities seized a total of 1.18 lakh pieces of such fake branded perfumes and deodorants, which was valued around Rs.2 crore.
The second container had body sprays and perfumes of different brands and a total of 59,424 pieces were found. The goods manufactured in China were falsely printed as Made in EEC for the perfumes and Made in the U.K for the deodorants.
While Usman is a resident of West Bengal, the others are residents of Assam.
