According to police, the husband and wife, Henry Vaiphei, 35, and Grace Khaute, 33, were arrested from Madanriting in Shillong on Wednesday after raiding their shop and subsequently they were forwarded to court.
The police initially seized two Chinese balm containers with heroin weighing around 0.9gm and from the shop and another 0.7gm from one Vang Lenthang from the same locality. During the raid, the police also seized nine cell phones and Rs 14,730 from their possession.
A police officer today said the duo were part of a big racket involved in circulating the drugs among the youths here. Concerned over the issue, the East Khasi Hills police are on a task to unearth the source of the supply of narcotics to parts of Shillong.
“We are trying to get to the source and we need to identify them as there are many kingpins who are using small time drug peddlers in Shillong,” East Khasi Hills superintendent of police A.R. Mawthoh said today.
According to the police officer, many illegal drugs are smuggled into Shillong from other states and a better coordination with neighbouring states would be able to check the trend. He also said that the police have identified several vulnerable areas in the city to check the circulation of drugs among the youths. The state has an anti-narcotics task force, which is following up the cases, the officer added.
