Driver cooks up stories for insurance claim

New Delhi

Says he was robbed, tied to the steering wheel and the vehicle set on fire by miscreants
In an incident reported from Narela area of outer Delhi, the driver of a Maruti Echo allegedly hatched a plot to get the insurance claim after his car caught fire after a short circuit in the CNG kit. He told the cops that he was attacked by some goons who tied him up with a cable after taking away his valuables and set the car on fire before leaving, after which he somehow managed a call to the PCR. However, cops have found some contradictions in his statement and are now planning to book him. Deputy Commissioner of police, outer district, BS Jaiswal said that Manoj, the driver of the car, is under the scanner with respect to the statement he made about the incident.

Hot spot: The Maruti Echo that caught fire on Wednesday night.
Tall tale"Fire broke out in his car on Wednesday night at around 9 pm while the police received a call from him at around 9:15 pm. He was taken to a nearby government hospital but he refused any medical aid. He had not told the cops yet that he was attacked. But on Thursday morning, he claimed before media that he was attacked, robbed, tied with a cable and his car was set on fire by the robbers. The police, after going through his statement and his call records and the crime spot, found contradictions in the same," said the DCP.
The official further said that Manoj had bought the car around six month back. He then fixed a CNG kit into the car to give it out on rent to people. No information of the CNG kit has been mentioned in his RC of the car and therefore police suspect he is cooking up stories for the insurance claim. "Manoj had no injury marks. He himself made the PCR call. How did the robbers miss his cell phone if they robbed him of everything else? He did not mention a case of robbery on Wednesday night when he was found. He changed his statement after 16 hours of the incident," said the police.
