The police have arrested the police constable identified as Pawan Kumar after registering a case under section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty).
The Sonipat SSP KK Rao informed the TOI that the cop had been placed under suspension and an inquiry ordered into the incident.
According to information, father of the girl is a witness in a case of murder of his cousin which occurred a year back in the village. The accused in the murder case however had been threatening him with dire consequences if he dared to testify against him in the in the court. After which he made an appeal with the Sonipat police to provide him police protection.
The witness was given police escort of a team of three cops including constable Pawan Kumar on the instructions of the district police superintendent recently.
The cops were duty bound to stay with the family during night also and were allotted a room in the house.
On Sunday night, when the girl went to serve him milk in his room, the accused cop who was alone in the room then, attempted to outrage her modesty.
The girl raised an alarm after which the family rushed to her help and reported the matter to police.
A police official maintained that the team deployed to guard the witness has been changed after the incident.
