Street Preacher Found Guilty in Elizabeth Smart Kidnapping

Dec. 10 -- A former street preacher was convicted today of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart, 8 1/2 years after the Utah teen was snatched from her bedroom at knifepoint and forced into nine hellish months of sexual slavery.

A federal jury in Salt Lake City deliberated fewer than five hours over two days before finding Brian David Mitchell, 57, guilty of both counts he faced -- kidnapping and transporting a minor across state lines. He faces life in prison.

Mitchell was in the courtroom when the verdict was read, singing a hymn. He could receive life in prison when he is sentenced on May 25.

Smart, now 23, smiled at the guilty verdict and began hugging family members and prosecutors.
