'Ex-terrorist saved my life'

Delhi: Russian hairdresser who was robbed of $10,000 cash, gold jewellery and passport in the Capital finds an unlikely ally

Russian hairdresser Elena Narkhova wanted to start her life afresh after getting a divorce. So she decided to leave her country and come to India, which she felt was a paradise. In June 2008, she came here and planned to open a hair dressing salon. And she even dreamt of marrying an Indian.

But fate seemed to have other plans for her. During her stay in a hotel in Paharganj area, Elena happened to meet and befriend a local, Prabhojot Singh. She told Singh about her plans and sought his help in realising them. Singh told her that opening a salon in India will cost her a lot of money. So she returned to Russia, sold her entire property and came back with money after a month.

Singh received her at Indira Gandhi International airport and took her to a hotel in Paharganj. He then married her in a local temple and they stayed in the hotel. "The next day I found myself alone in the hotel room. Prabhojot had gone and so was my $10,000 cash, gold jewellery and passport. I complained to local police but they didn't help me. I became sad because I was cheated by a person who had married me," said Elena.

Dejected and heart-broken Elena then happened to meet an ex-terrorist, Altaf Bhat. When he heard her plight, he helped her lodge an FIR at Paharganj police station and even offered her a place to stay. Since then she has been living with Altaf in a hope that police will arrest Prabhojot one day. "I want ask Prabhojot why he did this to me," said Elena while alleging that police are in know of his whereabouts but don't want to arrest him.
Despite being cheated and having faced police apathy, Elena is still positive about her Indian dream.

Altaf had arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police for carrying out terrorist activities. He was later convicted and has served his sentence. He told MiD DAY that now he did not believe in terror and his aim was to spread the message of peace. "When I met Elena, she was perturbed, had no money and even police was not listening to her. I felt it was my duty to help her," said he.

After rape, model accuses beau of threatening calls

Mumbai: Having filed a rape case against her live-in boyfriend, she claims he has been making late night calls to force her to withdraw the case

The 27-year-old model-actress, who had accused her boyfriend of rape and stealing her valuables, has now alleged that he has been calling her late in the night to abuse and threaten her, allegedly to pressurise her into withdrawing the police complaint she had lodged against him.

MiD DAY had earlier reported ('Actress accuses live-in boyfriend of rape, theft', March 4, 2011) about how the model, Savita (name changed), had filed a case against her boyfriend, Dipesh Parekh, a struggling model she met during the shoot of a movie in Jaipur.

She had accused him of having raped her a number of times, assaulting her, and running away with her money and jewellery worth more than Rs 6.5 lakh. The Goregaon police had then booked him under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sent a team to Rajasthan to search for him.

Last night, in a phone call to MiD DAY, Savita claimed that Dipesh had been giving her threatening calls after she lodged the police complaint.

"Last night, he called me to say that he would not let me stay happily because I filed a police complaint against him. He is threatening me that unless I withdraw the complaint, he will continue making my life miserable, and will make sure I do not get any movies to work in," Savita told MiD DAY.

She added, "He has been calling me in the night regularly, abusing and threatening me. I was in a relationship with him for the past two years and wanted to marry him. But he made false promises and ran away with my valuables."

On Saturday, Savita had met Additional Commissioner of Police Ramrao Pawar, north region, and told him that she has been getting these calls, police officials said.

"Savita told us about the threatening phone calls. The calls she has been getting are all from landlines. The last call was received from Jaipur and we have sent a team there to trace the accused. We are investigating the case," said Pawar.

Bad romance

Savita, a Goregaon resident, had come to the city from Delhi. She met Dipesh, who is from Jaipur, when she was shooting for a film in a village in Rajasthan in 2009.

The two had fallen in love during the shooting. She further claimed, "Initially, everything was fine, but then I became pregnant. Dipesh asked me to abort the child, which I did. In fact, during the relationship I had three abortions."

Savita also claimed that her boyfriend was involved in a sexual relationship with another male model and that when she confronted him about it, he started physically abusing her. "I tried to counsel him about his homosexual activities, but he didn't listen and wanted me to be in his life as well," Savita had said.

Nine teens gang up to kill friend

It seems the breakneck and combative lifestyle of Delhi is getting to not only the adults but the teenagers as well. On Sunday, 16-year-old Yash Gupta was stabbed to death in southeast Delhi allegedly by nine of his friends over a rather trivial issue.

The class 10th student of Cambridge School in Sriniwaspuri had spent Rs 2500 on a party held on December 3 last year in which the culprits had been invited. Later, Yash had started asking the boys to part with their share of the money spent on the party.

when he was approached by nine of his friends who had planned to
teach him a lesson.

2. Seeing them, Yash tried to run away but was caught.

3. One of the boys was carrying a knife and he repeatedly stabbed him in
the stomach.

4. The culprits then ran away from the scene, while Yash lay on the road bleeding.

"When his friends refused to pay the money, Yash contacted their families and complained about them. As a result most of the boys were either scolded or given a beating by their parents. Naturally, the culprits were seeking revenge," said a police officer.

The nine boys then decided to settle scores with Yash. They stopped him in the Sriniwaspuri market at 7 pm on Saturday evening when he was going to attend tuition classes and started thrashing him. When Yash tried to flee from the spot all of them chased him to the nearby Ramlila Maidan and then one of the accused stabbed him.

"After that the culprits fled from the spot. A passer-by saw him lying in a pool of blood and took him to
AIIMS Trauma Centre and called the police. Before dying, the victim mentioned the names of three of the accused. And the nine boys have been held," the officer added.

"My son was a topper in class. He was having trouble travelling to his school, which was in Sriniwaspuri, so I arranged a rented accommodation for him. There wasn't any cop at the spot where he was attacked. He was thrashed by nine assailants but no one even bothered to save him," said Madan Lal Gupta, father of the deceased.

All of the accused are minors and have been sent to a juvenile home in north Delhi. The victim was a resident of Chandni Chowk in old Delhi. "Seven of the accused are from Sangam Vihar area and two of them are students of Open Schools. We can't reveal their names as all of the accused are juvenile," a police officer said.

Two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, embarked on a massacre, killing 12 students and one teacher. They also injured 21 other students directly, and three people were injured while attempting to escape. The pair then committed suicide. It is the fourth-deadliest school massacre in United States history, after the 1927 Bath School disaster, 2007 Virginia Tech massacre and the 1966 University of Texas massacre, and the deadliest for an American high school.

The massacre provoked debate regarding gun control laws, the availability of firearms in the United States, and gun violence involving youths. Much discussion also centred on the nature of high school cliques, subcultures, and bullying, as well as the role of violent movies and video games in American society.
In April 2007, a gunman opened fire in a Virginia Tech dorm and then, two hours later, in a classroom across campus, killing at least 32 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in US history. The gunman was killed, bringing the death toll to 33.

Following the Columbine shooting, schools across the United States instituted new security measures such as see-through backpacks, metal detectors, and security guards; hence the phrase "the Columbine effects". Some schools implemented school door numbering to improve public safety response. Several schools throughout the country resorted to requiring students to wear computer-generated IDs. At the same time, police departments reassessed their tactics and train for Columbine-like situations after criticism over the slow response and progress of the SWAT teams during the shooting.

US in focus
Fifty-two percent of teens have hit someone in anger and 28 percent of teens think it's all right to hit or threaten a person who angers them, according to the Ethics of American Youth Survey, recently released by the Josephson Institute of Ethics, a non-profit organisation in Los Angeles.
The survey, taken by 43,321 teens ages 15 to 18, also revealed that 47 per cent had been bullied, teased, or taunted at least once in ways that upset them. The following are some startling statistics on teen violence in the US:
* According to SafeYouth.com more than 1 in 3 high school students, both male and female, have been involved in a physical fight. 1 in 9 of those students have been injured badly enough to need medical treatment.
* The 2002 National Gang Trends Survey (NGTS) stated that there are more than 24,500 different street gangs in the United States alone. More than 772,500 of the members of these gangs are teens and young adults.
* The 2002 NGTS also showed that teens and young adults involved in gang activity are 60 times more likely to be killed than the rest of the American population.

* In December 2007, a 14-year-old eighth class student was shot dead by two of his classmates - Vikas and Aakash - on the premises of Euro International School in Gurgaon's DLF Colony. Abhishek Tyagi, son of property dealer Rajinder Tyagi, received four shots in his body, including one in the temple and two on his chest, from close range. Earlier the principal of the school had worked out a patch-up among the boys but later, the duo went on to threaten Abhishek of dire consequences.
* On August 19, 2007 in Mumbai, Adnan Patrawala (16) from Lokhandwala was killed, by three young men, who befriended him through Orkut. Sujith Nair (28), Ayush Bhat (19), and Himmesh Ambavat (18), confessed to killing Adnan by strangling him. They kidnapped Adnan and asked his parents for a ransom of Rs 2 crore. But when they learnt that the news of the kidnap was being broadcasted on national television, they panicked, killed him and deserted his body in the marshes at Navi Mumbai. The police said the three had kidnapped Adnan to sustain their expensive lifestyles.

Indian girl raped, murdered in Australia

Melbourne: A 24-year-old Indian student has been found raped and murdered after her body was located stuffed inside a suitcase near a canal in Sydney last week.

"On 11 March morning, construction workers found the suitcase containing the woman's body in a water canal near Meadowbank Park and alerted police," said a statement issued by the local police.

The victim was identified as Indian student Tosha Thakkar and police were now waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to determine exactly how she died. They have confirmed she was last seen alive on March 9.

Indian girl raped, murdered in Australia

Thakkar was studying accounting at the Sydney College of Business and IT, which collaborates with Southern Cross University, and was a permanent resident of Australia.

Friends and family of Thakkar told media that they had no idea why she was killed.

The body of Thakkar was stuffed into a suitcase which construction workers spotted in a canal near Meadowbank Park as they were doing maintenance on an oil pipeline.

Police has arrested 19-year-old Daniel Stani-Reginald in connection with the murder and the accused was questioned by detectives and charged with murder and aggravated sexual assault.

Accused Stani-Reginald, who lived close to Thakkar in Croydon, was arrested at an Ashfield motel on weekend and appeared via video link in Parramatta Local Court yesterday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. The court refused to grant him bail.

The accused glanced at the Indian students who poured into the court in their dozens, filling the chairs and every centimetre of floor space, and then bowed his head for the duration of the hearing.

Charged with aggravated sexual assault and murder, he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused, with the matter adjourned to Burwood Local Court on Monday.

Outside the court, the students held up a poster that read "We want justice for our Indian international friend Tosha Thakkar".

Anish Popli, the husband of Thakkar's first cousin, said nobody had cause to attack her.

"She wouldn't hurt or harm anybody. She had been living in Australia for three or four years and did not fit the profile of a fresh-faced arrival vulnerable to attack. It's not like she's never been here - she knew her way around," he said.

Southern Cross University extended its condolences to Thakkar's family, friends and colleagues, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

The university is providing counselling and support services to students and staff.

Teacher arrested for sexual harassment

BANGALORE: A teacher working in a private school near here was today arrested on charges of sexually harassing minor girl students, police said.

Police said Gangadharappa (59), teaching class III students at the school, was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by a girl's mother.

In the complaint, the mother accused Gangadharappa of taking her daughter to the staff room and sexually harassing her after stripping her.

The teacher, according to the complainant, had been indulging in this obscene perversion for the past two years but fearing punishment the students had kept mum.

Police said they were questioning the school management in this connection.

"If required, we will take stringent action against them also," police said

Principal arrested for seeking sexual favours

PUNE: The Shikrapur police on Thursday arrested principal of a zilla parishad primary school at Digrajwadi for allegedly demanding sexual favours from a teacher.

Hanumant Harel (40), currently residing at Digrajwadi and hailing from Hivare near Shirur, was arrested under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the IPC on Thursday night after a complaint lodged by the teacher.

Sub-inspector Sangram Patil said that according to the complainant's report, on March 4, Harel had organised a meeting to discuss women's day celebration on March 8. "After discussions, the suspect started talking with the victim in an obscene language and demanded sexual favours," Patil said.

Since that day Harel was harassing the victim by making various gestures. Frustrated, the victim lodged a complaint on Thursday," Patil said.

Harel has been working as principal at the school for the last four years. The victim has also been teaching there for the last two years, the police said.

Radhika case: main suspect held in Mumbai

New Delhi: The main suspect in the Radhika Tanwar murder, Vijay alias Ram Singh was arrested in Mumbai late on Friday night from Vikroli station. Police is now bringing him to Delhi on Saturday from Mumbai, where he fled to four days back after killing Radhika on Tuesday.
Radhika, a Delhi University student, was shot dead on Tuesday in Dhaula Kuan.
The 20-year-old student fell prey to the bullets of her alleged stalker Ram Singh alias Vijay on a foot-over-bridge outside Ramlal Anand College in south Delhi's Dhaula Kuan on Tuesday.
According to investigators, Vijay allegedly followed Radhika at least twice with an intention to kill her in the past one month, the last one being three days before her murder.
Vijay allegedly nurtured "deep grudge" against Radhika after he was beaten up for harassing her three-and-half-years ago and used to tell his friends that whenever he would get an opportunity, he would take revenge. He felt insulted and left Delhi's Naraina for Mumbai.
"We have learnt that a month ago, he had boarded a bus in which the victim was travelling. However, he could not execute his plans. Last Saturday, he followed her on the foot-over-bridge," HGS Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), told reporters.
“The accused had psychopathic obsession since 2007 which was one sided and was working in Mumbai but would always come to Delhi and follow her” Said BK Gupta.
Radhika had told her friends about it but unfortunately the girl had not shared this with the family members.
Dhaliwal said, "It was a massive operation. We had to verify details of more than 2000 workers, 19 teams consisting of 300 policemen worked on arresting the accused."

School principal jailed for having sex with eight girls

Hanoi: A Vietnamese high school principal has been sentenced to nine years in prison for having sex with eight schoolgirls aged between 13- 18 years, in a high-profile sex scandal.
Mai Van Hung, the presiding judge in the case, said, Sam Duc Xuong was convicted after the one-day trial for having sex with students, in his office at the Viet Lam High School.
Hung said the students were paid by Xuong, who used his position as principal to have sex in exchange for higher grades for a year until September 2009, News.com.au reports.
The case was uncovered in 2009, when the family of one of the victims reported it to the police and attracted extensive coverage in the state-controlled media.

Mumbai : National-level player disappears while distributing invitations; family and police clueless about his whereabouts
National-level kabaddi player Sagar Narvekar's wife-to-be is one worried woman. And no, she isn't getting cold feet before the wedding; her betrothed is missing and nowhere to be found a day prior to the wedding day.
Eyewitnesses said that Narvekar (33), left his residence on Wednesday evening around 8.30 pm to distribute invitations for his wedding, but hasn't returned home since. Narvekar represented the state, Bombay University and Bharat Petroleum in kabaddi.
Realising something was wrong, when their son did not return, the Narvekars called him on his mobile but found that the phone was unavailable. After waiting for a few more hours, they rushed to the Chembur police station and filed a missing person's complaint. A day since Narvekar went missing, his family suspects that he has been kidnapped. Narvekar's sister Himali confirmed that he was missing. However, she said, "I do not want to speak now. We are trying to find him."
According to investigating officials, the cops have been searching for Narvekar since Wednesday night but with no result. Senior Inspector B B Rathod, Chembur police station, said, "The family registered a complaint on Wednesday night that he had left home and they were not able to get through to him on his mobile, as it was switched off. We have registered a missing person's complaint, as it is difficult to say if he is kidnapped. We are trying our best to find him as his wedding is tomorrow."
One of Narvekar's relatives said, "We don't know any reason that would force him to just disappear. He was in some kind of trouble, but nothing that would make him just vanish. We have filed a complaint and are hoping that he is found soon."
A police officer on the condition of anonymity said it was hard to say if he had been kidnapped. "No ransom call has been made yet. He was supposed to get married tomorrow and maybe that could be a reason for him going missing."

Lady luck seems to favour notorious rowdy-sheeter, Bettanagere Seena after he survived yet another attempt on his life while housed in Mysore sub jail. Seena is no stranger to attempts on his life and yesterday, another inmate fired six rounds from a country made revolver at him from close range. The attempt, which is one of three however, was futile and Seena survived the attack.

Seena, from Bettanagere Village on BIAL road and archrival Bettanagere Shankara, are both in the real estate business and attack each other frequently. Sources said they had sworn to kill each other and this apparently was another attempt made by Shankara. Seena who is in jail for murder was housed in Central prison. The police shifted him to Bellary jail after Shankara was arrested. Seena was shifted to Gulbarga sub jail by the police as a precautionary measure and then finally to Mysore jail in January.

Shankara who had contacts in the jail, hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Seena. With the help of his friend, Manju, another rowdy sheeter, he contacted Balaji Rao -- a rowdy lodged in Mysore jail on a murder charge.

Sources say that Rao was promised a hefty amount as supari and was even provided a country made pistol and live bullets by Manju's associates. They then managed to smuggle the weapon inside the jail a fortnight ago when they went to jail on the pretext of visiting him.
Yesterday, Rao fired six rounds at Seena when he was returning from the visitors' gallery after meeting his friends. Seena managed to escape, but with injuries to his arm when a bullet grazed him. Rao was overpowered by jail staff and Seena was taken to KR Hospital where he was treated.

Jail authorities including senior officials rushed to the spot and have initiated investigations. "We have registered a case against Rao for attempt to murder," said a police official. Officials, to ascertain the exact reason behind the attack, are interrogating Rao.

Two days after a Delhi University student Radhika Tanwar was murdered in broad daylight, the police seem to be close to a breakthrough with a youth, whom she had slapped, emerging to be a prime suspect.

Sources said that police had detained a 23-year-old youth named Victor for questioning on Thursday. During questioning, he revealed that a person named Amit might have shot Radhika because she had slapped him some time back.

DCP, (South), HGS Dhaliwal, said that some suspects who had been detained earlier were let off after questioning. Talking about the sketch of the suspected assailant, Dhaliwal said that the family members of the deceased girl had told police that it resembled the person who used to stalk Radhika.

However, he said, the sketch was prepared on the basis of vague recollection of three persons who saw the attacker running away. "Nobody has seen him from front," he said.

The family members had also not reported about any incident of molestation or stalking to police earlier, he added Officials investigating the case said that they have "narrowed down" on the line of investigation and were verifying several points, which have emerged during the probe even as two more people are believed to have approached the police with "relevant inputs". Nineteen teams of the south Delhi police are conducting raids in city and NCR to nab the culprit.

Protests continue
On Thursday hundreds of students marched from Arts Faculty to the V-C office in Delhi University demanding arrest of Radhika Tanwar's killer. In the University's south campus, students carried out a candlelight march.

The Delhi University Students Union has called for a strike on Friday and Saturday in all the colleges . An online campaign demanding justice for Radhika has been started by the DUSU on Facebook and Twitter.

Man loses Rs 9.7 lakh in online lottery fraud

Bangalore: Receives SMS informing that he had won a new car and a large amount of money, which he could claim after depositing a certain amount of money

A retired employee of a private firm was duped of Rs 9.7 lakh in an online lottery scam allegedly by a reputed lottery firm in the UK. B R Patel, a resident of Dollars layout in J P Nagar received an SMS saying he had won a brand new BMW car and a cash prize of Rs 3.63 crore ( £5 lakh).

Patel contacted the scammers via email and phone following the SMS. Two UK nationals asked him to contact one Arun Kumar, an Indian national, who convinced Patel to deposit Rs 9.7 lakh in various accounts to claim his prize, to which Patel agreed.

After failing to receive any conformation regarding his winnings, Patel filed a case of cheating with the J P Nagar police. In his complaint, Patel named Elder David and Collins of Bilton Road, Perivale, Greenford, London and Arun Kumar.

Police Inspector S K Umesh of J P Nagar police station said, "The cheats may have used fake identities and overseas SIM cards in the scam to cheat Patel. We have filed a case of online fraud and are investigating."

Man confesses to murder bid on 5-yr-old boy

Pune: Cops now investigating whether accused killed boy's mother and then tried to do away with child to eliminate witness

After a five-year-old boy survived an attempt on his life and described the man who had tried to kill him as his mother's friend, the police say they have reason to believe the accused, who has been arrested, murdered the child's mother and then decided to do away with the boy to eliminate a witness.

The child, Vinayak, was thrown into a water body near the Mutha. The boy survived the attempt on his life and was rescued by farmers.

The police arrested Kailash Shedge of Shedgewadi based on the boy's description of the man who had attempted to kill him. The incident took place in Kolewadi, Mulshi taluka, in the jurisdiction of the Paud police station.

The police now say they are confident they will crack the unsolved case of the recovery of a body of an unidentified woman near the Mutha nearly 20 days ago.

"The body of woman aged between 25 and 30 was found on February 20. It seems the woman died of a head injury," said Police Nayak Datta Jagtap.

Jagtap said the Vinayak had provided them with a vital clue when he said "Kailash Uncle" had hit his mother with a stone some 20 days ago.

A police officer said Vinayak had recognised the dead woman as his mother Sunita, but that they needed to contact her relatives "to substantiate the evidence against Kailash".

The police said Shedge had confessed to throwing Vinayak in the Mutha valley on March 7. They said Shedge first tried to strangle Vinayak; after that he threw him in Vaghjai near the Temghar dam.

Vinayak was taken by the current towards Kolwadi, where two farmers, Shankar and Sunil Ubhe, saved him from drowning in the water.

The police said Shedge had separated from his wife five years ago and last year, while on a visit to Mumbai, he had come in touch with a woman with whom he had established a relationship.

After Vinayak's rescue, the police initially thought the man he was referring to as Kailash Uncle had tried to kill him to remove an impediment to the growth of his relationship with the boy's mother.

But after Vinayak's identification of the dead woman as his mother, the police had to revise their theory and begin investigating whether Shedge attempted a second murder to prevent anybody linking him to the murder of the woman.

The police have booked Shedge under Section 306 of the IPC for attempt to murder and Section 317 of the IPC for abandoning a child under 12 years of age.

"Shedge was produced in court and remanded in police custody till March 14," said Police Inspector P S Nyahalde.

Boy wins over cops

The Paud police say the five-year-old rescued from drowning is now a special friend and that Vinayak's innocence had endeared him to them. "We have developed a special bond with Vinayak," said Police Nayak Jagtap. "We are trying our best to ensure that he gets proper care, love and education in the future."

Firing outside Delhi mall

A group of men opened fire outside a prominent mall in east Delhi on Thursday injuring a security guard. "The security guard Manoj did not allow a group of men to enter EDM complex in Gazipur with arms.

The men then allegedly opened fire at him and tried to flee. However, one of the assailants was apprehended," a senior police official said.

Manoj was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Doctors said he is out of danger.

22-year-old charged with kidnapping

22-year-old man charged with kidnap for eloping with minor

Nearly 5 months after 16-year-old daughter of Lohiyanagar businessman goes missing, police unable to trace her lover as he's switched off his cell
The Khadak police have levelled charges of luring a minor with the promise of marriage and abduction against a 22-year-old married man.

The accused was identified as Amol Kamble of Tadiwala Road in Bund Garden. The police said the accused had run away with the 16-year-old daughter of a businessman.

The police had originally registered missing person complaint in October after the teen's father, a Lohiyanagar-based businessman, approached them when he discovered his daughter had disappeared from the family residence.

"On the basis of information provided by the father, who runs a small-scale business in Lohiyanagar, the Khadak police had filed a missing complaint after the businessman's 16-year-old school dropout daughter disappeared from the family residence in the wee hours of October 18," said Sub-Inspector Anil Jambure. "We then went through the girl's cell phone records."

The police traced a cell phone number from which the girl had received several calls. "On the basis of the call details, we realised that there was a call made to the girl's cell phone on the night of the incident. When we were investigating, we realised that the SIM card was purchased in the name of an hotelier in Kothrud.

It seems the hotelier had given the SIM to one of his employees, who was identified as 22-year-old Amol Kamble, a resident of Tadiwala Road in Bund Garden area," said Jambure.

The police launched a search for Kamble in his hometown in Solapur district, but he was nowhere to be found.
"We have even came to know that the suspect Kamble had filed for divorce from his first wife and it is still in process. Moreover, he has stopped appearing for the case hearings," said Jambure.

"Kamble has switched off his cell phone, and that is why we are facing a lot of problems tracing him. But we are sure we will arrest him very soon." He police have filed a case of kidnapping under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC against Kamble.
