AHMEDABAD: A 24-year-old girl was abducted and raped by a group of three persons in Amraiwadi. She was then sold for Rs 50,000 to a prospective groom in a village of Amreli. The girl was abandoned by her husband and in-laws last week when they realised that she was not from the same caste.
The victim was sent for medical examination after she filed a complaint with the Amraiwadi police on Monday. The Dalit girl, a resident of Baliyanagar in Amraiwadi, used to work as a skilled labourer at Bharti Estate near Rabari Colony.
As per her complaint, she was abducted by a co-worker Manu Vankar who took her to an isolated spot in Bhuriyo Rabari's autorickshaw. There she was raped by Vankar. Later, one Lagha Bharwad also violated her modesty.
According to police, the gang held her captive for more than six months at different places in Ahmedabad district and elsewhere where she was repeatedly raped by Vankar. Then they took her to several villages to pass her off as a prospective bride. They finally struck a deal at Jambuda village in Amreli district where they got Rs 50,000 and forced her to marry Gabhru Rabari.
"Vankar had told Gabhru that the girl was an orphan and has been in their care since many years," said M S Sindha, inspector of Amraiwadi police station.
Soon after the marriage in November, 2010, Gabhru noticed his wife's behaviour suspicious and when he confronted her, the girl told him her tale of woes. Furious, Gabhru tried to hunt down the trio who had duped him but in vain. He then left her near her residence in Amraiwadi last week. The girl later lodged a complaint with Amraiwadi police.
"We have sent the victim to Civil Hospital for clinical examination. The case will subsequently be transferred to the city's SC/ST cell for further investigation," said Sindha.

'BPO owner' held for duping dealer of 25L
MUMBAI: When a well turned-out articulate young woman approached computer dealer Jitendra Vora for "help", he never imagined that she was out to dupe him.
In July 2008, Anita Shukla (28) visited Vora at his office, looking to rent computers; she told him that she needed to hire 109 computers to realize her dream: to start her own BPO. But as years passed, she defaulted on payments and then one day, she vanished. On Monday, Shukla was arrested by the Borivli police for duping Vora of around Rs 25 lakh.
Shukla, a graduate who stayed at a rented apartment in Malwani, had been arrested thrice by the economic offences wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police for financial frauds. She claimed to have separated from her husband, Sandeep, who was also booked by the EOW in the past.
"Vora from Natakwala lane in Borivali runs Arihant Infotech at Shimpoli village. The firm sells, repairs and rents out computers. Shukla first approached Vora after finding his firm's address from a telephone search engine," senior inspector Bhagwan Chate said. "The duo entered into an agreement on August 7, 2008, following which 109 computers were delivered to Shukla's office at Rokadia Lane in Borivli. The collective rent for all the computers was fixed at Rs 2.18 lakh per month."
Shukla gave Vohra post-dated cheques of Rs 15 lakh, but all of them got dishonoured. When Vora infirmed her about it, Shukla paid him Rs 3 lakh in cash and promised to pay the rest soon. In March 2010, she moved her office to Poisar in Kandivli without intimating Vohra, the police said.
"As Shukla stopped paying the rent, Vora started hunting for her. He traced her new office but could not contact her. In December, 2010, he lodged a complaint, after verifying which we lodged a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against Shukla on January 17," Chate added.
Shukla was produced in a metropolitan court in Borivli on Monday when she was remanded in police custody till February 2. The police have recovered Rs 5 lakh in cash and Rs 5 lakh in demand drafts from her. She claimed that the computers were with Sandeep and her brother-in-law, Abhijeet Gavan, the police said. "We are investigating the roles of Sandeep and Abhijeet. Both of them will be interrogated," the police said.

70-year-old retired principal raped, murdered
Allahabad: A 70-year-old retired government college principal here was raped and strangulated to death by a young man, who once worked as her domestic help, police said Thursday. The accused has been arrested.
The retired principal of Ishwar Sharan Girls' College was Wednesday raped and murdered at her residence in the posh George Town area by Amar Singh Yadav, 21.
"Yadav has admitted that he raped her, but initially had no intention to kill her. He says he strangulated her because she threatened to lodge a complaint to the police," Deputy Superintendent of Police S.D. Shukla told reporters here, some 200 km from Lucknow.
According to the police, Yadav had come to her house after a long gap. "After committing the crime, Yadav was about the leave but saw the woman's maid coming towards the house and, therefore, preferred to hide on the rooftop of the house," Shukla said.
"After getting a call from the maid, we reached the site and started our investigations. We came across a pair of men's shoes lying in a corner of the house. As the woman used to live alone in the house, the recovery of the shoes made us believe that the accused could be hiding somewhere in the house," he added. During the search, Yadav was nabbed from the rooftop.

'Porn swamy' arrested with CDs, cameras
Mathura, Jan 21 (IANS) The controversial Vrindavan 'Porn Swamy', accused of making pornograhic clips and movies using holy motifs and the backdrop of deities, was arrested Monday afternoon after more than ten days on the run, police said. The temple city of Mathura, 380 km from Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow, was outraged after the case surfaced earlier this month, with Hindutva groups burning his effigies and demanding firm action.
The Bhagwatacharya, described as a multi-faceted personality, has been accused of producing movies against the backdrop of ghats, holy shrines and the Yamuna river, police sources said.
Police said Rajendra, who is a popular katha vachak (narrator of mythological tales) and painter, made porn clips for his foreign disciples, who helped him market these through some websites.
Police in Vrindavan, 15 km from Mathura, confiscated a movie camera, CDs, and hours of footage with kids, his wife and some foreigners.
Mathura police said he had been booked under section 377 (unnatural sex) of the Indian Penal Code and 67B of the IT Act.
Mathura police presented the arrested Swami before mediapersons late Monday evening.
However, Rajendra said he had made the films and clips of his wife for his personal use, which were later stolen and misused by some people. He told police that he was a painter and an artist and he used his wife as a model to make paintings.
His wife was not brought before the media.
The investigating officer said some of the pictures show him engaged in 'unnatural sex', while a few others show the couple with small kids in obscene acts.
Both of these being cognisable offences, the two have been arrested, he added.
The Bhagwatacharya denied all the allegations and said the CDs had been doctored.
Earlier, his wife filed a police complaint against an IT firm which allegedly leaked the film from a laptop Rajendra had given for repair.
She told police that Rs.10 lakh was allegedly demanded in ransom before the footage went into public circulation.
Mathura's Superintendent of Police (city) Ram Kishore Verma said that Rajendra and his family members had been shuttling between Kanpur, Mathura and Ghaziabad to avoid arrest.
Investigating officer Vivek Tripathi arrested him Monday as soon as he entered his house.
A police team also seized CDs and cameras from his relative's house in Ghaziabad.

C Mohan (50), was abducted from his house at Basaveshwaranagar on February 27, 2010, following which; his wife had filed a missing complaint at Mahalaxmi Layout police station.
The police found a partially burnt body on the same day in Bandigowdana Palya of Huliyuru Durga police station limits. Valuables, cash and mobile phone of the victim were missing.
Since it was a sensitive case, the home department transferred the case to the CID. In their investigations, the CID found that Mohan was last seen with his close friend R Hemanth Kumar (33), with whom he used to have business deals. After keeping a close watch on him, the police picked up Kumar for questioning.
It turned out that Kumar was earlier a driver with Mohan's brother-in-law, and later became business partners with Mohan. With Mohan's money, Kumar floated a marketing company.
A detailed grilling led Kumar to confess that he had killed Mohan because Mohan had expressed the desire to have sex with Kumar's wife. An enraged Kumar hatched a plan to kill Kumar.
He invited Mohan over for drinks. Later, on their way back, he stabbed Mohan to death, took the body to the outskirts of the city, and burnt it. He even took his valuables and mobile phone to make it look like murder for gain.
Armed with his confessional statement the CID has filed a chargesheet against him on murder and also for destroying evidence. Initial investigations have revealed that Kumar had killed Mohan because he had been unable to repay the money lent to him.
"Initial investigations have revealed that Kumar owed some money to Mohan and unable to repay, he decided to eliminate him," said a police official.

Father suspects hand of others
A day after prime suspect sent a letter to the DG, we spoke to Payal's father, who believes the murder was for gain
While James Kumar Ray is claiming his innocence in connection with the murder of Payal Surekha, her father raised doubts suspecting that there is involvement of more than one person.

Demand for justice: Deen Dayal, Payal's father will approach the
police commisioner seeking a reinvestigation
Speaking to MiD DAY from his hometown Assam, Deen Dayal said, "Initially we believed the police theory and after few days of analysing the chronology of the incident, started suspecting that there was something more to the murder."
"Though we trust the police investigations, we still doubt that there is a strong motive behind the murder and it has been committed for a gain," Dayal said hinting that it could be her insurance or other benefits.
Dayal added that the family have strong reasons to prove that there is more to the murder and they will present their observations before the police commissioner soon, seeking reinvestigations into the case, he said.
He further said that we are not giving clean chit to James, but on the face of the case we believe that the murder is committed by more than one person and there is need for reinvestigations into the case.
Ray the prime suspect in the murder case has written a letter to the Director General of police and state human rights commission that he is innocent and the police have made him confess to the crime under duress.
James also said that during the identification parade conducted on Friday, a police constable came forward and shook hands with James, to give a signal to witnesses.
However DCP (south) Sonia Narang had brushed aside allegations stating that they have conducted thorough investigations and this could be a airtight case sure for conviction.

Foreign student alleges rape by boyfriend
PUNE: A 25-year-old foreign national, a student at a city-based college, registered a case of rape against her boyfriend after he refused to marry her.
In her complaint on Friday night, the woman said the incident occurred at her residence in Mundhwa on January 1. The Mundhwa police said that the alleged boyfriend (name withheld) is also in the same age group.
Assistant commissioner of police Vitthal Pawar (Wanowrie division) on Saturday told TOI that the victim had arrived in Pune around one-and-a-half years ago for higher studies. She got friendly with the suspect when she first came to the city.
Pawar said, that on January 1, on the pretext of visiting her, the man entered the woman's residence and allegedly raped her around 1.30 am. The victim filed the complaint after the man refused to marry her, Pawar said, and added that she had given the man's name, photograph and telephone number to the police so that further action can be taken.
The woman, who speaks broken Hindi, does not know the residential address of the man. She has alleged that the man was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place. The police have booked the suspect under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
Asked about the delay in lodging the complaint, a police official, requesting anonymity, said the woman had tried to negotiate with the man, but he had refused to comply.
The official said the police had initially planned an inquiry into the incident as they suspected it to be a case of consensual sex, in view of a Supreme Court ruling. After holding a series of discussions with senior police officials, however, the complaint was registered, as the victim is a foreign national and any delay on the part of the police could prove detrimental.
The police have given information about the incident to the foreigner registration branch and the embassy of the country of her origin.
Senior police inspector Devidas Patil of the Mundhwa police station refused to divulge information about the incident on the grounds that investigations are in progress

The teenager was released following a direction from Chief Minister Mayawati, who faced severe embarrassment over the incident involving her party MLA and the Allahabad High Court ordered that the girl be "released forthwith from jail unconditionally" and "adequate security" be provided to the alleged victim and her family.
Mayawati ordered the dalit girl''s release on the basis of a probe by CBI-CID which found the allegations levelled against her to be untrue and said action will be taken against policemen involved in harassing the minor who was charged with theft apparently as part of a "conspiracy" after she was allegedly raped by Dwiwedi.
The girl said she was living in fear. "I am very afraid. I want that I should be given a safe place to live," she said.
Sub-inspector Jabbar Ahmad was yesterday suspended for manhandling the girl during her detention in the police station.
The girl alleged that Ahmed refuse to take her statement. "He only took the version of the MLA," she said.
The victim said she was confident that she would get justice now.
The release order was issued two days ahead of the hearing on bail application of the girl in a Banda court.
The girl was arrested on December 12 on charges of committing theft at the MLA''s residence.
She later alleged she was raped twice by the MLA on December 10 and 11 and stuck to her allegations in a statement made before a local court on January 10 after which it ordered police to take immediate legal action.
"The chief minister has ordered the release of the girl currently lodged in Banda Jail on the basis of a report submitted by the CB-CID," an official spokesman said in Lucknow yesterday. He said there was a provision under which the Chief Minister can order release of an undertrial if it has been settled that the case was "fake".
Detailed probe will continue, the spokesman said.
